Addictions of the geek-kind (not of the drug kind)

As I type this post I can feel the cold, icy fingers creeping up my spine and into my brain. Yes, the cold, icy fingers of that most evil of internet daemons made by teh darkness to ensnare our very souls and lives (and time and money). The evil of the World of Warcraft. I have quit this dark-spawned game twice in the last 7 months when the stupid, stupid other 10 million (I kid you not, they reached that number a few months ago.) players finally got too annoying to tolerate. I suppose they have to be annoying when they are a horde of 12-14 year olds (or at least act that way) who's purpose in life is to be illiterate and obnoxious at the top of their lungs on a game server with an average player population of around 2000 or more.

I suppose that there must be many decent and intelligent players out there. I found several when I moved to a RP (Role-Playing for you non-gamers) server and for a few weeks was in a state of bliss. Until some of the PVP (Player vs. Player) and normal servers went down for a few days. Guess where all the little obnoxious punks from the PVP's went? And, it was for no other reason then to annoy all us people that were playing quietly by ourselves or in small guild groups. After the PVP servers were restored, several of them had made charactors on the server and decided to stay. And thus, the quiet little RP server chat, filled before with next to nothing (most of the talking was done in /whisper or /guild chats) was filled with digital cries of "ur a ghai fagg" and other various forms of pathetic and vulgar yammering.

And now, even knowing what will happen, I find myself tempted to play again. Why? Because, despite the cartoonish air and brightly coloured graphics, it is really quite a nice piece of fantasy, with a blend of stupidity and dark, intelligent thoughts and stories. In summary: WOW, great game, soul destroyingly bad community that you desire to bludgeon with a dictionary after about three minutes.
